Accessing Nagano by Public Transport
From Tokyo Station
Take the JR Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano station. From Nagano station, board an express Alpico bus to the Hakuba area ( about 3 hours ). Stops on the bus include (but are not limited to): Hakuba station, Hakuba Goryu, and Hakuba Norikura.
Alternatively, for easy access to the JR Oito Line, take the JR Hokuriku Shinkansen to Itoigawa (Niigata Prefecture). Stops on the JR Oito Line include (but are not limited to): Hotaka, Shinano-Matsukawa, Shinano-Omachi, Hakuba, and Minami-Otari stations ( about 5 hours ).
You may also take the JR Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano station ( about 80 minutes ), then transfer to the JR Chuo Main Line Limited Express Shinano to Matsumoto ( about 50 minutes; one train/hour). From Matsumoto, you can board the JR Oito Line to explore Nagano.
From Shinjuku
From Shinjuku station, board the JR Chuo Main Line Limited Express Azusa towards Matsumoto. For ease of travel, we recommend the once-daily (round-trip) direct service train which connects to the JR Oito Line. Stops on the JR Oito Line include (but are not limited to): Hotaka, Shinano-Omachi, Hakuba, and Minami-Otari stations ( about 4 hours, 10 minutes ).
From Shinjuku bus terminal, board the highway express bus towards Azumino, Omachi, and Hakuba. Bus stops include (but are not limited to): Azumino Hotaka, Azumino Matsukawa, Shinano Omachi, and multiple Hakuba area stops ( about 5 hours ). Note that the timetable differs by season. Alternatively, take a highway express bus to Matsumoto (hourly departures).
From Nagoya Station
Take the JR Chuo Main Line Limited Express Shinano to Matsumoto station, then board the JR Oito Line to explore Nagano. Stops on the JR Oito Line include (but are not limited to): Hotaka, Shinano-Matsukawa, Shinano-Omachi, Hakuba, and Minami-Otari stations ( about 4 hours, 10 minutes ).
From the Kansai Region
From Shin-Osaka, take the JR Tokaido Shinkansen to Nagoya station, then transfer to the JR Chuo Main Line Limited Express Shinano to Matsumoto station. From Matsumoto, board the Oito Line to explore Nagano. Stops on the JR Oito Line include (but are not limited to): Hotaka, Shinano-Matsukawa, Shinano-Omachi, Hakuba, and Minami-Otari stations ( about 5 hours ).
Accessing Nagano By Car
From Tokyo to Omachi
Take the Nerima IC onto the Kanetsu Expressway. Continue onto the Joshinetsu Expressway, then exit at Nagano IC to get on the Hakuba-Nagano toll road to reach Omachi ( about 3 hours, 30 minutes ).
Take the Takaido IC onto the Chuo Expressway. Continue onto the Nagano Expressway, then exit at Azumino IC. Take the local roads to reach Omachi ( about 3 hours ).
From Nagoya
Take the Komaki IC onto the Chuo Expressway. Continue onto the Nagano Expressway, then exit at Azumino IC. Take the local roads to reach Omachi ( about 3 hours )
From the Kansai Region
Take the Suita IC onto the Meishin Expressway or Tomei Expressway. Continue onto the Chuo Expressway, then the Nagano Expressway. Exit at Azumino IC then take the local roads to reach Omachi ( about 5 hours 10 minutes ).
